The Best Time of Year for Photos in Winnipeg

The Best Time of Year for Photos in Winnipeg — Locations photograph by Teri Moore, TAG Photography

Winnipeg gives you four genuinely different seasons to photograph in, and none of them is wrong. They just suit different things. Here is how each one tends to go.

Autumn: mid-September to mid-October

This is the busiest window for a reason. The elms in River Heights and Wolseley turn gold, Kildonan Park and Assiniboine Forest fill with rust and amber, and the light goes low and warm early in the evening. It is ideal for family sessions and engagements. The catch is that peak colour lasts only about two weeks and the calendar books up months ahead, so if you want autumn photos, reach out in the summer.

Winter: December to February

Winter photos in Winnipeg are underrated. Fresh snow acts like a giant softbox, so the light is even and flattering, and a bright toque or scarf pops beautifully against the white. We keep winter sessions short and moving, usually 30 to 45 minutes, and pick sheltered spots with somewhere warm nearby. Overcast days are often better than a hard blue sky, and the day after a fresh snowfall is the one to hope for.

Spring: late April to early June

Spring is the wildcard. It can be brown and bare one week and lush the next. But it brings a few things you cannot get any other time: the cherry blossoms at King’s Park in mid-May last about a week, and the first green of the year along the river paths is fresh and clean. Spring is also a good time for maternity sessions timed to a summer due date.

Summer: June to August

Summer evenings are long and golden — in June the good light runs past nine. That flexibility makes summer easy to schedule around work and bedtimes. Midday sun is harsh, so we shoot in the last two hours before sunset, often in the shade of Assiniboine Park or along the Seine River. Summer is also the season for weddings and the engagement sessions that lead up to them.

So when should you book?

For a specific look — autumn colour, cherry blossoms, fresh snow — plan a season ahead, because those windows are short and popular. For everything else, the honest answer is that the best time is whenever your family is together and in a good headspace. The light can be worked with. The people are the hard part to schedule.
